  1. Below is a summary of the changes to the Microsoft Windows Driver
  2. Library (WDL). The WDL offers support for many printers, displays, and
  3. sound cards not provided with Microsoft Windows operating system
  4. version 3.1.
  5.  
  6. For a complete listing of the WDL's contents and instructions for
  7. obtaining the WDL, query on "Q82006" (without the quotation marks)

  24. 5/14/92 - THE DRIVERS HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED. The Help files,
  25.           UNIDRV.HLP and FINSTALL.HLP, were replaced. They are now
  26.           exactly the same as the Help files that are shipped with
  27.           Windows 3.1.

  29. 4/30/92 - The drivers for the Brother HL-4 and HL-8E did not change.
  30.  
  31.           The BROHL.EXE file changed to include drivers for several
  32.           additional Brother printers: the HJ-100, HJ-770, HL-8, and
  33.           HL-8D.

  35. 4/22/92 - This change included a new PCL4X.DRV file that was needed to
  36.           correct the Star LaserPrinter Identification problems in
  37.           Control Panel Printer Setup. (The Star printers were being
  38.           identified as a Brother HL-4 when the Setup button was
  39.           chosen.) The only change to these Brother printers is that
  40.           the paper size on the Brother HL printers will now default
  41.           to 8.5-by-11-inch paper instead of A4.

  135.           the Microsoft Windows HP DeskJet driver is an update to the
  136.           one provided in the Windows 3.1 package (version 1.0). It
  137.           corrects the problem with incorrect extended characters
  138.           printing when using font cartridges from Pacific Data
  139.           Products.

  141. Hewlett-Packard (HP) PaintJet Printers - (HPPJET.EXE)

  144. 7/10/92 - HPPJET.EXE IS NEW TO THE WDL. This version (version 2.1) of
  145.           the Microsoft Windows 3.1 printer driver for the HP PaintJet
  146.           and PaintJet XL is an update to the one provided in the
  147.           Windows 3.1 package (version 1.0). (Note that this version
  148.           of the HP PaintJet driver requires the Microsoft Universal
  149.           Printer Driver version 3.1.1 or later.)

  151.           Version 2.1 of the HP PaintJet driver corrects the following
  152.           problems:
  153.  
  154.            - Margins on the second and subsequent pages are 0.5 inch
  155.              higher than they are on the first page when the PaintJet
  156.              XL is used.
  157.  
  158.            - When device fonts are used on the HP PaintJet, text on
  159.              the second and subsequent pages prints all on one line.

  258.           driver is considered to be more robust. It is recommended
  259.           that customers using this printer use the WDL version of the
  260.           driver.

  262. Olivetti Printers (OLIVE.EXE)

  277. Panasonic 24-Pin Printer Driver - (PAN24.EXE)

  280. 7/17/92 - This version (version 2.0) of the Microsoft Windows
  281.           Panasonic 24-pin printer driver is an update to the one
  282.           provided in the Windows 3.1 package (version 1.0). It
  283.           corrects the following problems:
  284.  
  285.            - Some extended characters not mapping to the correct
  286.              Windows ANSI character set.
  287.  
  288.            - Some extended characters using incorrect character widths
  289.              for proportionally spaced fonts.
  290.  
  291.            - A3, 11-by-17-inches, and fanfold 14 7/8-by-11-inches
  292.              paper sizes added.
  293.  
  294.            - User defined paper sizes not functioning correctly.
  295.  
  296.            - Incorrect printable regions.
  297.  
  298.            - Adds support for two new models: the Panasonic KX-P 1124i
  299.              and the Panasonic KX-P 2624.
  300.  
  301.            - Provides a way for users to adjust where the driver
  302.              should expect the unprintable regions occur. This is
  303.              accessed through the Options Margins dialog box. The
  304.              default values are provided as specified by the
  305.              manufacturer.
  306.  
  307. PostScript Driver - PSCRIPT.DRV (PSCRIP.EXE)
  308. --------------------------------------------
  309.  
  310. 7/17/92 - This version (version 3.53) of the Microsoft Windows
  311.           PostScript driver is an update to the one previously
  312.           provided (version 3.52) in the WDL. It corrects the problem
  313.           introduced in the 3.52 version with PostScript errors
  314.           occurring with the "setresolution" command on IBM PostScript
  315.           printers other than the IBM 4029.
  316.  
  317. 6/25/92 - This version (version 3.52) of the Microsoft Windows
  318.           PostScript driver is an update to the one provided in the
  319.           Windows 3.1 package (version 3.5), and to the one previously
  320.           provided (version 3.51) in the Windows Driver Library. It
  321.           corrects the following problems:
  322.  
  323.            - 600 dpi resolution not functioning with IBM 4029 in
  324.              PostScript mode.
  325.  
  326.            - Certain files generating PostScript errors for an "arcto"
  327.              command from various applications.
  328.  
  329.            - System resource loss with applications using the ResetDC
  330.              call, such as version 2.0 of Microsoft Word for Windows.
  331.  
  332.            - Performance loss when many soft fonts are installed.
  333.  
  334.            - Downloading TrueType fonts as native TrueType fonts
  335.              mapping extended characters incorrectly.
  336.  
  337.            - Error handler not downloaded when minimal PostScript
  338.              header is requested by CorelDRAW.
  339.  
  340.            - GP fault in PSCRIPT.DRV with Harvard Graphics for Windows
  341.              when requesting KernPairs information from driver.
  342.  
  343.            - Workaround available for envelopes printing upside down.
  344.              Add envelopeOrient=270 under [Printername, port] section
  345.              of WIN.INI file. Functionally equivalent to
  346.              LandscapeOrient=270, as described in section 4.7 of
  347.              PRINTERS.WRI.
  348.  
  349.            - Four new Escape commands available to applications
  350.              capable of generating their own PostScript output.
  351.              Details on these commands are available in the Windows
  352.              SDK/DDK portion of the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
  353.  
  354.            - EPS files created by the Postscript driver (selected
  355.              in the Options Dialog box) are no longer rotated based
  356.              on currently selected orientation.
  357.  
  358.            - Various Linotype typesetter problems described below:
  359.  
  360.               - Support for Linotype 100, 300, and 500 now added.

  400.            - "User Defined" paper sizes not functioning correctly.
  401.  
  402.            - TrueType fonts not printing correctly on printers
  403.              using the PostScript cartridge from Pacific Data
  404.              Products. See article Q84079 for more information
  405.              on using this PostScript driver update to correct
  406.              this problem.

  408. QMS-PS 2000 (PS2000.EXE)
  409. ------------------------
  410.  
  411. 7/17/92 - PS2000.EXE IS NEW TO THE WDL. This driver updates the QMS-PS
  412.           2000 driver in the Windows 3.1 retail package. This updated
  413.           version corrects a problem with the manual paper feed not
  414.           working correctly with the QMS-PS 2200.
  415.  
  416.           This driver also contains the Microsoft Windows PostScript
  417.           driver version 3.53. See PSCRIP.EXE for the changes made to
  418.           version 3.53.

  420. Seiko Printers (SEIKO.EXE)

  450.           .DRV file and the OEMSETUP.INF file. Also, for ALL Star
  451.           printers, the paper size correctly defaults to
  452.           8.5-by-11-inch paper instead of A4.

  500.           is an update to the driver previously available on the  WDL
  501.           and the driver provided in the Windows 3.1 package. It
  502.           corrects the following  problems:
  503.  
  504.            - Not being able to select different graphics resolutions
  505.              that have have the same horizontal resolution from
  506.              version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows (for example,
  507.              120 x 1440 dpi and 120 x 72 dpi).
  508.  
  509.            - DeviceCapabilities API function not correctly returning
  510.              DC_MAXEXTENT and DC_MINEXTENT values.
  511.  
  512.            - Drivers not recognizing newly installed TrueType fonts if
  513.              TrueType fonts are installed while the application is
  514.              active.
  515.  
  516.            - QUERYESCSUPPORT Escape not showing SETABORTPROC Escape as
  517.              supported.
  518.  
  519.            - General protection (GP) fault if more than 32 permanent
  520.              soft fonts installed.
  521.  
  522.            - Corrects all problems with the 4/6/92 version.
  523.  
  524. 4/6/92 -  This version of the Universal Printer Driver is an update to
  525.           the one provided in the Windows 3.1 package. It corrects the
  526.           following problems:
  527.  
  528.            - General protection (GP) faults when printing very small
  529.              bitmaps. This problem is most noticeable when using
  530.              HPPCL.DRV and printing at 75 dots per inch (dpi)
  531.              resolution.
  532.  
  533.            - Incorrect extended characters for device fonts printing
  534.              on a page where both TrueType and device fonts are used.
  535.              This is most noticeable when using HPPCL.DRV.
  536.  
  537.            - GP faults when printing from Aldus PhotoStyler.
  538.

  543. Appian RGDI and Compatible (RGDI.EXE)
  544. -------------------------------------
  545.  
  546. 6/15/92 - THE DRIVERS HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED. All the compressed files
  547.           have been renamed using the .XX_ convention. A message that
  548.           displays when the .EXE file is run was also added. These
  549.           changes are designed to reduce the problems that occur when
  550.           the .EXE file is run from the WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  551.           directory.
